NAS Launches Digital Bed‑Management System to End ‘No Bed Syndrome’

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) has announced a Train‑the‑Trainer programme aimed at equipping key health workers and stakeholders with the skills needed to implement the Integrated Bed Management and Referral Coordination System (IBMRCS). The initiative is part of NAS’s effort to strengthen emergency referral coordination and improve collaboration between emergency response agencies and health facilities.

The IBMRCS will give emergency dispatch personnel real‑time data on hospital bed availability, facility capacity and specialised services. Designated staff at participating facilities will update bed occupancy and service availability live, allowing Emergency Medical Technicians and dispatchers to confirm bed availability before transporting patients.

NAS said the system is expected to cut delays in emergency referrals and prevent ambulances from moving between hospitals in search of open beds. The programme includes the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Korle‑Bu Teaching Hospital, the University of Ghana Medical Centre, NAS itself and other sector facilities.

By improving patient transfer coordination, the system will support informed emergency care decisions and improve timely access to appropriate care.
