MTN Ghana Invests $1.1bn in Network Expansion Over Three Years

MTN Ghana has committed roughly $1.1 billion to its telecommunications network in the last three years, including $318 million spent in 2026, as it seeks to broaden coverage, enhance service quality and meet rising digital demand.

Chief Risk and Compliance Officer Joseph Dogbe revealed the figures at the company’s Upper West Regional Media and Stakeholders Forum in Wa, noting the investments aim to expand capacity, improve customer experience and strengthen infrastructure.

As part of the rollout, MTN Ghana is installing 500 new network sites nationwide to extend connectivity to underserved communities. The expansion comes amid growing reliance on digital platforms for communication, business transactions and financial services.

Dogbe highlighted Mobile Money’s role in financial inclusion, citing its use for payments, fund transfers and transaction management. He also stressed the importance of cybersecurity and data protection to maintain customer confidence as digital usage rises.

In addition to network upgrades, MTN Ghana paid about GH¢5.6 billion in direct and indirect taxes during the first half of 2026, bolstering national revenue. The company also runs the MTN Ghana Foundation’s MTN Skills Academy, which aims to equip 100,000 young people with digital skills for better employment prospects.

Customer service initiatives include a pilot customer‑initiated cash‑out system for Mobile Money transactions and the establishment of 632 community shops across the country. Fourteen of these shops are in the Upper West Region, with plans to add eight more by year‑end 2026.

The annual Media and Stakeholders Forum, attended by regional newsroom heads, the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, and representatives from the National Communications Authority and the Environmental Protection Agency, seeks to strengthen MTN Ghana’s engagement with media and other stakeholders while providing operational updates.
