Afrobeats singer Mr Drew ignited a heated debate on X Space when a fan addressed him with the friendly term “chale,” a phrase commonly used among friends in Ghana. Mr Drew, who had encouraged informal interaction, insisted that such familiarity should not be mistaken for disrespect.
During the live session, the artist declared, “I am not your mate. A lot of people think I am their mate, but I am not your mate. When it comes to money and age, I am not your mate, and you need to put that in your head.” He warned that fans should recognize the difference between him and their peers.
The fan countered, calling Mr Drew “not even an A‑list artiste” and demanding he be blocked. The singer retorted with insults, labeling the participant a “small foolish boy” and referring to him as “Kwasia.” The exchange escalated before the artist threatened to block the fan.
The incident has highlighted the growing expectations and tensions that arise when artists engage directly with audiences on social media platforms.
