In a bid to decentralise Ghana’s fintech ecosystem, MOMO FinTech has launched the MOMO FinTech Lab, a talent‑development initiative that has already drawn over 1,000 entries nationwide. The programme, which kicked off with a hackathon in Tamale, aims to equip young innovators with practical skills and support them in turning local ideas into market‑ready solutions.
Four teams from the northern zone—MoMoCovert, among them—have earned spots at the National Demo Day in Accra. There they will work alongside mentors to refine their projects before presenting to investors and other stakeholders. The selection marks a significant milestone for the participants, who spent four days testing ideas, conducting market research and receiving technical guidance.

Shaibu Haruna, CEO of MOMO FinTech, said the initiative was launched after noting that most fintech ventures are concentrated in Accra, despite a wealth of talent across the country. “There are so many talented young men and women across the length and breadth of Ghana who can be groomed to solve for their local needs,” he told the media. Haruna added that the competition attracted 14 per cent of its entries from northern Ghana, and that the programme will also open doors for internships and partnerships to help innovators deepen their technical knowledge.

Team MoMoCovert’s lead, Lukman Seidu, described the competition as demanding but exciting. “It’s been a tough competition but we are excited that we have been able to make it out which means a lot to us,” he said.
Looking ahead, MOMO FinTech plans to provide sustained support to help participants improve their ideas and build viable solutions. The company encourages young people across Ghana—especially in the north—to bolden their ideas, think them through, and seize available opportunities.
