Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson said on Wednesday that authorities have confirmed the location of seven crew members of the missing fishing canoe Second Chance within Togo’s territorial waters and are working with Togolese counterparts to bring them home safely.
Speaking to Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News, Mr Nelson explained that contact had been established with the crew and that the Togo Navy had been notified. He added that rescue operations, which began on Monday after reports of the missing crew on Sunday, are still ongoing.
The search, coordinated by the Western Regional Marine Police Command, involves the Ghana Navy, Ghana Maritime Authority, Fisheries Commission, coastal police stations and local fishing communities. The canoe’s owner, Nana Kweku Atta, first reported the incident at the Sekondi Fishing Harbour Police Station on Sunday after the vessel failed to return from a fishing trip offshore Axim.
Preliminary investigations suggest the canoe may have suffered engine failure, causing it to drift toward Tema and the Volta coast. Efforts are now focused on safely escorting the seven men back to Ghana.
