During an inspection tour in the Volta Region, Minister Sam Nortey George of the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations outlined a nationwide push to finish 2,016 mini telecommunication masts and bring 5,000 additional communities online. He noted that roughly 1,600 sites are already completed, with 1,400 actively passing traffic.
Mr Nortey warned that contractors lagging on their sites would face a 30‑day ultimatum and potential surcharges for delays. He also highlighted plans to upgrade existing 2G and 3G networks to 4G, hoping the Finance Ministry will continue funding the expansion.

Despite progress, the minister lamented that about 4,000 fibre cuts were recorded between January and June 2026, which degrade network quality by roughly 4% when repaired. He called for better coordination between the ministry and road contractors to avoid repeated disruptions.

Traditional leaders, including Togbe Dikro of Akofe Gadza, praised the initiative as a bridge to the digital world, while the ministry also supported local training centres, equipping the University of Health and Allied Sciences with 100 laptops to boost digital skills.
Looking ahead, the ministry aims to complete the remaining sites within the next year, with ongoing monitoring to ensure timely delivery and quality service.
