Minister Warns Ghana Water Staff Against Sabotage

Ahmed Ibrahim, Ghana’s Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, visited Ghana Water Limited’s headquarters on Tuesday, October 20, and issued a stern warning to the company’s staff. He urged the team to stay focused on the core mandate of delivering safe and clean water to Ghanaians and to avoid any acts of sabotage or politicisation of the organisation.

During the visit, Ibrahim expressed confidence in GWL’s capacity to improve performance. He reminded employees that sabotaging a water company is a curse that harms everyone involved. “We collapsed the Cocoa Board and most public operations, and there was redundancy. So sabotaging Ghana Water is like sitting on a tree and cutting the branch of the tree,” he said. “It will fall down with you.”

The minister called for a renewed sense of nationalism and patriotism, urging staff to work hard so that Ghana Water and the nation will prosper. He rejected the management’s claim that the June 29 floods caused the rise in non‑revenue water (NRW) to 47 percent as of June 2026. Instead, Ibrahim challenged GWL to bring NRW down to 40 percent or lower by the end of December 2026. “If you can come to 40% by the end of December in non‑revenue water, I will be happy,” he said.

GWL’s leadership will need to address the high NRW levels and demonstrate a commitment to operational integrity if the minister’s expectations are to be met. The outcome of this push will be closely watched by government officials and the public alike.
