Mahama Ayariga, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, began a facility tour of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) on Monday. The visit focused on the Aayalolo bus service, the government’s flagship public transport scheme.
The minister first visited the Aayalolo office in Madina, where he met with management and staff to discuss the challenges the service is facing. He then moved to the Achimota yard, where several buses have been parked due to mechanical breakdowns. The tour is slated to finish at the Kinbu facility in Accra.
Ayagira said the exercise would allow the government to better understand the operational difficulties confronting Aayalolo and to identify the interventions needed to improve the service. He assured the management and staff of the government’s commitment to revamping the Aayalolo system to ease transportation challenges and improve public mobility in the Greater Accra Region.
During the visit, the minister assessed the number and condition of the buses available to the transport service, and engaged with management on measures to return more grounded vehicles to operation. He emphasized that the government would look for ways to accelerate repairs and maintenance, and to increase the fleet’s operational readiness.
As the tour concluded, Ayariga highlighted that the government will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with GAPTE to implement the necessary changes. The next steps will involve detailed planning and resource allocation to bring more buses back into service for commuters across the city.
