Lisandro Martinez, Manchester United’s Argentine centre‑back, publicly apologised for remarks he made following the club’s 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. In a social media post after talks with club officials, Martinez said his frustration over the defeat led him to speak out of anger and that he regrets the timing of his comments.
The defender noted that he had been “very passionate” and that he “live football with great intensity.” He added that he had spoken to the club’s leadership and manager Michael Carrick in a “very positive conversation” where they exchanged views about the aftermath of the game.
Martinez acknowledged that the club had left Carrick with an under‑equipped squad and that he had expected more investment from the club’s technical director Jason Wilcox. He said he still believes in his teammates and the club’s ambition to achieve success for supporters.
Following the apology, the club reportedly fined Martinez for his outburst. Carrick is set to hold a news conference before the upcoming Premier League match against Leeds United. It remains unclear whether Martinez will be selected for the squad, and his long‑term future at Old Trafford is uncertain as his contract expires at the end of the season with a 12‑month extension option.
