Mahama Urges UK to Prioritise Africa’s Debt Challenges During G20 Presidency

President John Dramani Mahama addressed the cross‑party UK Parliamentary Group in London on Friday, October 23, urging the United Kingdom to make Africa’s debt challenges a priority during its 2027 presidency of the G20.

He warned that the high cost of debt repayment limits African countries’ ability to invest in essential sectors such as education, healthcare, road infrastructure and job creation.

Mahama called for stronger international cooperation to help African states manage debt obligations and secure more affordable financing, and for reforms that would make the global financial system more responsive to developing economies.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns that debt servicing pressures are eroding public finances across the continent, reducing resources available for development priorities.

He urged the UK to champion reforms that improve access to financing for sustainable development at the G20 forum of major economies.
