Mahama Urges Christians in Public Office to Deepen Humility

On Wednesday, October 14, President John Dramani Mahama addressed delegates at the 10th World Assemblies of God Congress in Accra, urging Christians, especially those in public office, to let their faith strengthen humility, integrity and commitment to serving citizens.

He said religious beliefs must translate into practical acts of compassion, honesty and fairness, stressing that the true impact of worship should be reflected in how people conduct themselves in their workplaces and communities.

Speaking under the theme “One Mandate, Every Nation,” the President called on attendees to link preaching the gospel with serving society, adding, “Let the energy that fills our worship also strengthen our commitments to the communities around us today, across our society.”

Mahama highlighted that the congress’s impact should extend beyond the gathering, with communities experiencing the values promoted by the church through the daily actions of its members. He cited teachers’ patience, business owners’ honesty, health workers’ care, employers’ fairness and public servants’ integrity as practical ways to demonstrate Christian values.

He further emphasized that public officials bear a particular responsibility to reflect these values, especially by respecting citizens and paying attention to those whose concerns often go unheard. “Our faith should deepen our humility. It must strengthen our respect for our citizens. It must imbue us with honesty and integrity, and it must sharpen our attention for those whose voices are least likely to reach the centre of power,” he said.

Mahama added that prayers offered for political leaders should serve as a reminder of their obligation to govern conscientiously and remain committed to the welfare of the people. He also expressed appreciation for his membership in the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, describing it as a deeply meaningful part of his faith.
