President John Dramani Mahama urged the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) – Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger – to accept international assistance in combating terrorism during an interview at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London.

He highlighted Ghana’s experience of working with the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States, noting that the country shares intelligence and conducts joint training with these partners to strengthen counter‑terrorism efforts.

“In Ghana, we work with the UK, we work with Germany, we work with France, we work with the US. We share intelligence, we do training together, you know. So I believe that the AES countries should open up so that anybody who’s interested in assisting in the fight against terrorism should be able to do so,” Mahama said.

The former president also called for a new regional framework to help West African states respond more effectively to violent extremism and other security challenges.

Ghana’s appeal comes amid escalating security threats across the Sahel, with AES members facing increasing attacks from extremist groups.
