On Saturday, October 17, Andrew Appiah Danquah, Legal Director of the United Party, praised President John Dramani Mahama for suspending Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director‑General of the National Sports Authority (NSA). The decision came amid allegations of irregularities in visa arrangements for Ghanaian travellers to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, Danquah described the controversy as “much ado about nothing” and urged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop demanding further action against government officials. He said the President’s action showed leadership and that investigations were already underway.

Danquah added that the suspension was based on advice from Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams and that a criminal investigation was also in progress concerning the NSA board. He questioned the NPP’s motives for calling for the summoning of Minister Adams and the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority before Parliament.

“What is NPP’s purpose? Is it because of a genuine fidelity to the principle of probity and accountability?” Danquah asked, suggesting the opposition’s demands were driven more by desperation than integrity.

The President’s decision to act swiftly on the NSA controversy has been welcomed by the UP, which sees it as a sign of decisive governance amid the World Cup visa debate.
