President John Mahama has announced a renewed push against drug trafficking, with the government already mobilising security forces to tackle the growing menace. Lawyer and NDC Communications Team member Theophilus Dzimega Jr. told Newsfile that the president’s proactive stance will bear fruit in the coming days.
Dzimega said the administration has begun implementing measures after recent seizures of large consignments linked to Ghana. He added that the president has briefed the country’s security leadership on the steps being taken.
Defending law‑enforcement agencies, Dzimega highlighted that the interception of drug consignments demonstrates the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and other agencies are actively disrupting trafficking networks. He noted that prosecutions are underway for individuals linked to recent cases, but authorities must also plan follow‑up actions after arrests and seizures.
He stressed that the drug‑trafficking problem transcends party lines, citing past cases such as the MV Benjamin incident to show the issue predates the current government. “This is a nationalistic thing. We need to face head‑on. It is not because NDC is in government, NPP is in government today,” he said.
Dzimega praised law‑enforcement personnel for operating under difficult conditions and called for recognition of their efforts. He added that the government’s interventions will become clearer as the new measures begin to deliver results.
Observers will watch for the rollout of the president’s plan and the impact on drug seizures in the coming weeks.
