On Friday, October 16, President John Dramani Mahama addressed Ghana’s newly appointed Ambassador to Israel, Evelyn Korantemaa Ofosu‑Amable, and three other envoys at Jubilee House. He confirmed that Ghana recognises the sovereign State of Palestine and backs a viable two‑state solution where Israel and Palestine coexist peacefully within internationally recognised borders.
Mahama stressed that Ghana’s engagement with Israel must adhere to international law, protect civilians and uphold human dignity. He warned that Ghana’s foreign policy should consistently apply these principles, noting that the credibility of the international system depends on such application.
While affirming the country’s position on Palestine, the president said Ghana would pursue mutually beneficial ties with Israel in areas that could aid national development. He highlighted agriculture, technology, health, water management and education as key sectors for cooperation. The president tasked the ambassador-designate with identifying partnerships that build local expertise and meet clearly defined development needs.
Mahama also directed the mission to advance discussions on a proposed Labour Mobility Agreement between Ghana and Israel, emphasizing that any deployment of Ghanaian doctors must safeguard their rights and align with Ghana’s health workforce needs. He instructed the embassy to maintain regular contact with Ghanaian agricultural interns in Israel under the MASHAV programme, urging proactive oversight of their safety, welfare and training conditions.
In closing, Mahama reaffirmed that Ghana’s foreign policy will remain guided by international law, peaceful cooperation and the protection of national interests.
