Mahama Meets Trade Ministry, Free Zones Authority Over Customs Act Concerns

President Mahama has scheduled a meeting with the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and the Ghana Free Zones Authority for next week to tackle concerns raised by businesses over the new Customs Act, 2026. The discussion will follow the Finance Minister’s return from the World Bank and IMF meetings.

Businesses have voiced that the new legislation appears to roll back some incentives previously available to free zone enterprises. Mahama acknowledged the complaints during a visit to the Ghanaian‑owned garment manufacturer DTRT, saying, "I know that there has been some new legislation under the new Customs Act, which the Free Zones industries are complaining about because it has rolled back some of the incentives they received."

He added that the government is "100% behind you" and will help industries grow. "We do not roll out the red carpet only for foreign investors. We roll it out also for domestic investors," Mahama stated.

The meeting aims to resolve the issues and find a way forward that preserves incentives for both domestic and foreign investors while aligning with the new customs framework.
