KNUST to Receive 2,000 New Laptops for One Million Coders Expansion

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is set to receive an additional 2,000 laptops as part of the government’s One Million Coders Programme (OMCP). The move will allow the university to increase its learning centres from 10 to 50, creating 40 new hubs for digital skills training.

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George announced the planned provision during a working visit to KNUST, which was part of his Ashanti Region tour to assess the programme’s implementation and seek expansion opportunities.

The initial 500 laptops delivered to KNUST in 2024 equipped the first ten learning centres. The new batch of 2,000 laptops will support the establishment of 40 additional centres across the campus, expanding access to technology‑enabled training for students and other prospective learners.

During his visit, the Minister toured existing learning centres and spoke with students to gauge their experiences with the programme. He urged greater participation, noting the government’s goal of widening digital education and equipping more young people with skills relevant to the evolving employment landscape.

Mr George also revealed that the Ministry is exploring partnerships with other tertiary institutions in the Ashanti Region, including Kumasi Technical University, to extend the OMCP beyond KNUST. Such collaborations could broaden the initiative’s reach and enable more students to benefit from structured digital skills training.

While the announcement did not specify a delivery date for the new laptops, the expansion is expected to strengthen KNUST’s capacity to deliver the training and provide additional opportunities for beneficiaries to develop competencies that support innovation, entrepreneurship and employment in Ghana’s growing digital economy.

Future monitoring visits by the Ministry will continue to assess the programme’s implementation, identify operational challenges and determine areas where additional resources and institutional partnerships could improve its reach.
