Dr Ekua Amoakoh, spokesperson for NPP flag‑bearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and chair of the party’s Health Committee, revealed that her grandmother was a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and served as one of its early treasurers in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking in a personality profile interview on JoyNews’ PM Express with Emefa Adeti, Dr Amoakoh recalled spending much of her childhood with her grandmother, learning from her political engagement and the discipline of public service.
“My grandma is a founding member of the NPP. She was one of the first people to be treasurer in Ashanti Region. She is a council of elders—like she is,” she said.
The interview also touched on Dr Amoakoh’s upbringing at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where her grandmother worked as Director of Nursing, and her parents’ encouragement to study medicine, a path she initially resisted but later embraced for the training it offered.
Her account offers a glimpse into the family relationships that shaped her own path into medicine and politics, linking her to the party’s formative years that began in 1992.
What follows is a deeper look at how family legacy can influence political trajectories in Ghana, a theme that continues to resonate as the NPP prepares for upcoming elections.
