Administrator of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Rashid Tanko‑Computer, called on Ghanaians to express gratitude for President John Dramani Mahama’s return to office, arguing the 2024 election victory averted a potential collapse of the country’s educational system.
Tanko‑Computer noted that the challenges facing Ghana’s education sector had become starkly apparent in the run‑up to the 2024 elections, with parents voicing concerns about the long periods their children spent at home. He said the situation had affected families nationwide, including his own, and that the change in administration was critical to addressing some of the sector’s problems.
Speaking to TV3 Ghana on Tuesday, September 8, he warned that without the new administration, the educational system could have faced even more serious difficulties. “Ghanaians should be grateful for voting President John Dramani Mahama back into office; otherwise, our educational system would have collapsed,” he said. He added that parents were worried about how long their children stayed in the house, a situation he personally experienced. “I had to find someone to teach my child in the house because they were always home for three months,” he recalled.
Tanko‑Computer highlighted that when the Free SHS programme was rolled out, infrastructure issues were raised. He explained that e‑blocks were introduced to bridge access gaps but were discontinued after eight years, further straining the system.
He concluded that the return of Mahama was a turning point for Ghana’s education, urging the public to recognize the president’s role in stabilising the sector.
