Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has sent a $250,000 relief package to Ghana, equivalent to about GH¢3 million, for victims of the June floods.
The funds were transferred directly to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) on Friday, October 16, and will be administered by the agency to affected communities.
Minister Ablakwa explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had jointly selected ADRA as an independent implementing partner to oversee the distribution, ensuring that the assistance reaches beneficiaries through a transparent process without government interference in beneficiary selection.
The announcement came during the inauguration of Ghana’s National Consultative Committee on Regional Integration (NCCRI), which oversees ECOWAS regional integration programmes and social interventions in the country.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating that the process would be guided by integrity.
The June 29 floods affected more than 38,000 people across the Greater Accra Region, displaced over 7,700 households and claimed at least 15 lives, reigniting calls for stronger flood prevention and urban planning measures.
With the ECOWAS donation, authorities and relief partners aim to address the immediate needs of those impacted by the disaster.
