Ghana Begins Exporting Eggs to Burkina Faso Amid Surplus

Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku announced that Ghana has started exporting eggs to Burkina Faso after negotiations prompted by President John Mahama’s directive. The move follows the clearance of more than 20 trucks loaded with eggs at the border, allowing the goods to enter the neighbouring market immediately after talks.

Although the initial exports have helped, Opoku said the volume is still too small to absorb the country’s sustained surplus. To broaden the domestic market, the ministry is collaborating with the Minister for Education to incorporate eggs into meals under the School Feeding Programme.

Opoku made the comments while inspecting a poultry, meat and feed processing facility under construction in Bechem, Ahafo Region. The plant will house two processing lines—one for broilers and another for layers—capable of handling 6,000 birds per hour. It will also feature three cold rooms, a feed mill and a hatchery to support production and sustainability.

The government plans contractual arrangements with poultry farmers in Ashanti, Upper East and surrounding areas, ensuring a steady supply of birds for the factory. Two trucks are being procured to distribute the factory’s packaged products. Work on the project is roughly 50 % complete, with all certificates paid, and the contractor guarantees operation by the end of Q1 2027.

As Ghana seeks to balance its poultry output, the new facility and export strategy represent key steps toward stabilising the sector and expanding market reach.
