From 11 October to 14 November, lecturers at Kwadaso, Wenchi, Ejura, Damongo and Ohawu Agricultural Colleges underwent a three‑to‑four‑week training‑of‑trainers course on drone operations, precision farming and Internet of Things technologies. The programme, delivered by GI‑KACE, is part of the Strengthening Digital Agriculture Skills Initiative, funded by the Government of the Republic of Korea through KOICA and supported by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).

Participants were introduced to soil and moisture monitoring, agricultural data analysis and weather station use, with the goal of integrating these tools into classroom teaching. Ofori Nyamekye, an instructor at the training, said the focus was on data‑based farming practices to enhance food security and the industry at large. “We are integrating the technological devices into agriculture to have data‑driven information for good farming practices,” he noted.
The initiative follows the handover of more than US$500,000 worth of digital agriculture equipment to the five colleges, including drones, soil testers, weather stations, GPS devices and agricultural software. Programme policy officer at WFP Ghana, Kyoreh Yoo, said the training would enable teachers to deliver high‑quality, practical instruction that aligns with industry needs. “Through this approach, students in the colleges will ultimately gain knowledge, technical skills, and hands‑on experience needed to apply those modern technologies in agriculture and also contribute to the transformation of the sector,” he said.

The Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) plans to incorporate the programme into the standard curriculum for agricultural colleges and will grant accreditation to institutions that adopt it as a study course, ensuring ongoing monitoring of implementation. The effort marks a significant step toward modernising Ghana’s agricultural education system and preparing a new generation of tech‑savvy graduates for the sector’s digital future.
