GAUA Considers Ending Strike If 114% Market Premium Restored

Rev. Kwaku Karikari Amoah, National President of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), said the union will weigh calling off its ongoing strike once it receives a formal reply on its demand to restore the market premium to 114 per cent of basic salary.

He noted that the market premium for university administrators and senior members fell from 114 per cent of their basic salaries in 2012 to less than 25 per cent today.

GAUA is awaiting a response from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) by Friday, 16 October 2026. The commission has agreed to seek a mandate from the Ministry of Finance to address the market premium issue, after which the union will consult its members on whether to end the strike.

Other concerns raised by the association, such as a one‑time research allowance and rollover retirement arrangements, have reportedly been resolved. The FWSC has also been tasked with addressing disparities under the Single Spine Salary Structure.

Following a meeting with the Ministry of Education on 12 October, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu urged GAUA to call off the strike by the weekend, pledging government commitment to the issues and directing the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to engage university management on outstanding matters.

GAUA will decide on the strike’s future once the formal response is received, with the potential for a pause pending the restoration of the 114 per cent market premium.
