The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) announced that 48 previously grounded Aayalolo buses have been repaired and deployed on major routes across Accra, raising the number of operational vehicles to 128.
Managing Director Awudu Dawuda revealed the figures during a visit by Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga to the Madina Aayalolo terminal.
"The 80 buses that we inherited – the most important thing was for us to enhance mobility and ease congestion in the Greater Accra region – and so we had to repair over 48 buses and these buses have been added to the 80 buses and so we currently have 128 in our corridors. If I say corridors, I am talking about the routes we are on," Dawuda explained.
The move comes as part of GAPTE’s strategy to improve public transportation and reduce traffic congestion in the capital. The organisation had inherited 80 operational buses and subsequently undertook repairs on 48 additional vehicles to increase fleet capacity.
Minister Ayariga’s visit was aimed at assessing the Aayalolo service’s operations and exploring ways to make the system more efficient for commuters.
With the expanded fleet, commuters can expect shorter wait times and smoother journeys on the busiest Accra corridors.
