On 16 October 2026, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) held a graduation ceremony at Gondar Barracks in Accra to award 20 personnel who completed the Special Operations Forces Basic Course 5‑26. The ceremony marked the strengthening of the GAF’s capacity to address emerging security threats and enhance counter‑terrorism operations.
Acting Chief of the Army Staff Brigadier General Franklyn Kwasi Agbebo addressed the graduates, underscoring the importance of special operations forces in intelligence‑led operations, precision and rapid response. He highlighted the need to bolster border security and counter‑terrorism capabilities along Ghana’s northern borders, and urged the new officers and soldiers to maintain discipline, physical fitness, tactical proficiency and professional integrity. Agbebo reminded them that the special operations badge represents responsibility rather than privilege.
Brigadier General Richard Kainyi Mensah, Commander of the Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB), praised the Brigade’s recent successes in international military exercises and competitions. He noted the Brigade’s historic silver medal at the 2026 Cambrian Patrol in the United Kingdom, describing it as a milestone for an African country. Mensah also announced that assessment and selection for the next Basic Course (Course 6) would begin in November 2026 and encouraged qualified female officers and soldiers to pursue special operations opportunities. He expressed gratitude to the Military High Command, supporting formations, training institutions and international partners for their continued support in developing the Brigade’s operational capabilities.

The Basic Course 5‑26 began with 87 candidates, including two officers and 85 soldiers, who were assessed and selected in November 2025. Thirty candidates qualified for training, which commenced on 12 January 2026. After nine months of intensive training, 20 personnel—one officer and 19 soldiers—completed the course and were awarded the special operations badge.
Looking ahead, the GAF will continue to expand its special operations capabilities, with the next cohort of trainees expected to begin in November. The successful completion of Course 5‑26 signals a significant step forward in Ghana’s readiness to counter evolving security challenges.
