Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, his family announced early Friday morning through a statement on the actor’s official Instagram page.
The post read: “We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.” The family expressed gratitude to fans and well‑wishers for their prayers and support.
Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children. Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, he completed primary and secondary education in Cameroon before moving to Nigeria for university studies. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt in 1996.
He began his career in 1989 with a debut in Missing Mark, directed by Ndubuisi Oko. His breakthrough came with the 1995 film Rattlesnake, where he portrayed Ahanna, a role that cemented his status as a recognised face in Nollywood. Over the next three decades he appeared in numerous films, including Blood Money (1997), Stigma (2013) and Mboputa (2020).
In 2020, Duru won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. He also received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007 for his influence on young people. In 2010, he served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria and was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards that year.
Months before his death, Duru had dismissed circulating reports that he was battling a life‑threatening illness, calling the footage shared online in June false and criticizing those spreading it. The actor’s sudden passing comes as a shock to the industry and his fans worldwide.
The Nollywood community mourns the loss of a prolific actor whose work spanned over three decades. Tributes are pouring in from colleagues, fans and industry bodies, all recalling Duru’s talent, humility and dedication to the craft.
