In a letter to Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, 134 former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who were appointed during former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo’s NPP administration have demanded payment of terminal benefits that they claim were withheld after they left office in October 2021.
The petition, signed by former Akatsi South MCE Leo‑Nelson Adzidogah, states that the MMDCEs’ tenures were extended while new appointments were pending, and they were instructed to remain in office at the start of the second term of the Akufo‑Addo administration. When they were not renominated, the officials left office without receiving the benefits due to them.
According to the petition, the former MMDCEs expected their benefits to be paid together with those of their successors at the end of the second term. “However, to our utter surprise, our successors received their terminal benefits, but we were left out,” the document reads. The group argues that because colleagues who were renominated for a second term received benefits covering January 2021 to October 2021, it is unfair to deny the 134 MMDCEs benefits for the period they served.
The petition frames the omission as an oversight and urges the Finance Minister to authorise payment of the outstanding benefits. The former MMDCEs expressed hope that the Ministry will respond favourably and resolve the matter promptly.
