On Tuesday, Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza sat down with Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George and other stakeholders to tackle the persistent problem of fibre optic cable damage during road construction and rehabilitation across Ghana.
The discussion highlighted the need for better coordination among road agencies, contractors and telecommunications service providers so that underground cables are identified and safeguarded before excavation begins. Early planning, effective information‑sharing and closer collaboration were cited as essential to minimise disruptions to communication services.
Both ministers underscored that improved coordination would reduce avoidable cable damage, limit service interruptions and support the country’s digital development objectives. The engagement is part of broader efforts to protect critical infrastructure while ensuring the efficient implementation of road projects.
Stakeholders agreed that stronger collaboration between the roads and communications sectors would help ensure fibre optic cables are protected before construction activities start, thereby reducing the risk of cuts and the associated service disruptions.
Further details on the implementation plan are expected to be released by the ministries in the coming weeks, with the aim of establishing a joint monitoring mechanism for all future road works.
