ECG Warns Customers Against Fake Meter Sales and MoMo Payment Calls

Electricity customers across Ghana are being targeted by fraudsters who sell fake meters or demand mobile money payments for supposed ECG services. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a public warning urging users to stop sending money to private MoMo numbers and to use only the ECG Power App or the shortcode *226# for all transactions.

Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, ECG’s General Manager for External Communications, explained that the company operates a fully cashless system and that any payment sent to a personal mobile money wallet does not reach ECG and will not appear on the customer’s account. He highlighted two common scams: first, individuals posing as ECG staff sell unregistered meters and vanish after receiving payment; second, callers claiming to be ECG representatives inform customers that their meter is ready and ask for immediate payment to a personal MoMo number.

Dr Ayiku stressed that ECG does not sell meters through private agents and that customers should only apply for new meters or services through official channels, including district offices and the ECG Power App. He urged consumers to verify any request, keep their PINs and passwords confidential, and to report suspicious calls or visits to ECG and the police. “Treat any request to pay into a personal mobile money wallet as a fraud attempt,” he warned.

Customers are advised to never send money to a MoMo number given by a caller, even if the caller claims to be ECG staff, and to purchase power and pay bills exclusively via the ECG Power App or *226#. Any other payment method should be treated as fraudulent and reported immediately.
