Dr Ekua Amoakoh, the spokesperson for NPP flag‑bearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party’s Health Committee, revealed how her parents’ determination guided her into medicine, even though she initially pursued other interests.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Dr Amoakoh described her childhood in Kumasi’s Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where her grandmother served as Director of Nursing and her family lived in the doctors’ flats from infancy.

She said the hospital environment made a career in medicine seem inevitable, noting that when she reached university application time, her mother had already completed the paperwork and simply asked her to sign it.

Despite growing up surrounded by medical staff, Dr Amoakoh admitted she resisted the path for several years, even fighting her parents’ choice during her first three years of medical school.

She explained that her early interests leaned toward wealth creation and business, describing herself as a “typical capitalist” who valued economic growth through creativity and value creation.

Over time, however, she has come to appreciate the discipline, resilience and problem‑solving skills forged by medical training, stating that the process itself can benefit anyone, even those who do not practice medicine.

Dr Amoakoh also shared details about her family, noting she is the fourth of six children, with a close‑aged sister named Ama, and that a younger brother joined the family later.

Looking ahead, she remains committed to her role in the NPP Health Committee, while reflecting on how her upbringing has shaped her perspective on healthcare and public service.
