The 2026 edition of December in GH was officially launched on Tuesday, October 20, at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra. Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Abla Dzifa Gomashie opened the event, inviting Ghanaians and visitors to immerse themselves in the nation’s music, fashion, food, culture and entertainment during the festive season.
Speaking under the theme “Ghana to the World,” Gomashie emphasised that the initiative should focus on the experiences Ghana offers rather than the debate over the names Detty December and December in GH. She highlighted that the success of the programme should extend beyond concerts and parties, creating sustainable economic opportunities for local businesses and creative professionals.
“The true value of December in Ghana must be measured not only by the excitement of the events or the number of visitors it attracts, but also by the sustainable economic opportunities it creates for Ghanaians,” Gomashie said. She urged bloggers, content creators, booking agents, hoteliers, tour operators, food vendors, fashion designers, artisans, filmmakers, musicians and young entrepreneurs to benefit from the influx of visitors.
Gomashie also warned tourism and hospitality operators to prioritise visitor safety, professional service, reasonable pricing and quality experiences, noting that Ghana’s reputation as a welcoming destination depends on how visitors are treated. She encouraged guests to explore all 16 regions, stressing that attractions beyond Accra deserve attention.
The minister highlighted the government’s Black Star Experience initiative, which promotes Ghana through music, film, fashion, gastronomy, literature, heritage and the performing arts. She announced a collaboration with the African Union Development Agency (AUDA‑NEPAD) to host the maiden African Festival of Arts, Culture and Creativity (A‑FESTA) from December 9 to 11, 2026.
Gomashie acknowledged the contributions of Ghanaian creatives such as Wode Maya, Chef Abbys, Christie Brown, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale and Wiyaala in promoting the country internationally. She called on Ghanaians to act as ambassadors, shaping international perceptions through the experiences they create for visitors.
Attendees included the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Efua Houadjeto, and other key figures in the tourism and creative industries. December in GH, often linked to Detty December festivities, is Ghana’s festive‑season experience, bringing concerts, festivals, parties, nightlife, fashion, food and cultural activities to life across the country.
