At the CSIR National Scientific Conference, Deputy Director‑General Professor Marian Quain urged Ghana to adopt a focused research agenda that tackles local challenges through indigenous knowledge and technology. She said a targeted approach would help create practical solutions for the country and the wider sub‑region, while supporting sustainable development.
Professor Quain also highlighted the need for private‑sector involvement in research through contract research, allowing scientists to identify specific industry needs and provide credible data that can improve business productivity. She noted that researchers often seek international funding, which can be highly competitive, and that a more purposeful, directed research outlook is essential for Ghana.
"Going forward, we need a more purposeful, directed research outlook for the country so that we will identify national problem areas, set our research objectives, and address indigenous challenges," she said.
The CSIR’s call comes as Ghana seeks to strengthen its innovation ecosystem and drive economic growth through science and technology. Stakeholders will need to collaborate to translate the agenda into actionable projects and secure the necessary resources.
