During a working visit to the Northern Region on Saturday, September 5, Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Agbodza warned that contractors who fail to finish projects on time risk exclusion from future phases of the government’s Big Push programme. He said the government would no longer award additional contracts to those who had already failed to deliver entrusted works.
Agbodza stressed that timely completion and proven capacity to execute projects would be key criteria when selecting contractors for subsequent road works. The minister delivered the warning as part of a nationwide inspection of road projects.
He expressed satisfaction with progress on the Tamale Outer Ring Road, currently being built by China Railway No. 5, Sinohydro Corporation Limited and Munisco Construction. The government remains committed to finishing the project by the end of 2027, he added. "We believe the quality of life in this town would improve greatly when we finish this road. Tamale is one of the fastest‑growing cities in West Africa, to be honest. And when we do this, we give an opportunity for further investment and quality of life," Agbodza said.
Contractors now face a clear message: meet deadlines or risk losing future Big Push contracts, a move that could reshape the road construction landscape across the country.
