On Sunday, September 6, 2026, a canoe carrying six passengers, a tricycle and a cow capsized on the Isaka Kura‑Tonka‑Yeji stretch of Volta Lake, killing 21‑year‑old Mathias Kpodovia and leaving six others rescued.

The operator, identified as Promise, told Adom News that the cow began struggling inside the canoe, frightening two passengers who leapt into the lake. One of those who jumped, Mathias Kpodovia, drowned.

Promise immediately alerted community members, who formed a search team. After several hours, the body was retrieved and conveyed to Matthias Hospital by police for investigation.

Authorities have not yet released details on the cause of the cow’s distress or the exact circumstances of the capsizing.
