Breast Cancer: Women Urged to Wash Bras Daily to Avoid Skin Irritation

Registered Public Health Nurse Edith Duah of the La‑Nkwantanang‑Madina Municipal Health Directorate spoke to women at Madina Market on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, urging them to wash bras daily, especially in hot weather.

Duah cautioned that sweat and friction from bra wires could irritate breast skin and create sores that may require medical attention. She warned that “some people can wear same bra to the market all week without washing…the metallic part of the bra is pinching her yet she will wear that same bra. Before you realise, it will create a wound on the breast.”

She also urged women to seek medical care for any unusual breast changes instead of ignoring them. “Let us also keep ourselves and our environment clean. Even if you have a disease, maintaining good personal hygiene can increase your chances of living longer,” she added.

The remarks were made during a breast cancer awareness and screening campaign organised by the Adunyame Foundation and Hadassah Network Outreach. The event aims to raise awareness and encourage early screening for breast cancer.

Women attending the market are encouraged to wash their bras after each use and to maintain overall personal and environmental hygiene as part of their health strategy.
