Bovi Ugboma, the Nigerian stand‑up comic, writer and actor, told the CreativiTea podcast that he has always turned down roles that would have limited him to the “warri boy” persona he first portrayed in the 2007 hit series Extended Family. He said the offers he received in the early days were “tied to either being like that character, or a gate man, you know, or a passive role,” and he rejected them because he believed “there’s more to me.”
The 46‑year‑old, who grew up in Warri and was born in Benin City, explained that the fear of being stereotyped began in his teenage years. He added that even now, he continues to decline roles that do not align with his vision for his career. “I want to earn money, but I know there is more to me than to be typecast,” he said.
When asked whether he would advise young creatives to follow his lead, Bovi urged them to “stick to what you want no matter what comes your way.” He added that a chosen career path can still be profitable even if it involves a niche, but it depends on the individual’s strength and background. He encouraged fellow artists to “make themselves sugar so that opportunities (the ants) could come to them naturally.”
Despite the success of his comedy career, Bovi remains cautious about accepting roles that could confine his artistic range. He continues to choose projects that challenge him and reflect his diverse talents.
