The Bank of Ghana (BoG) announced that its latest Heritage Series banknotes now feature enhanced tactile markings, designed to help persons with disabilities identify denominations and handle cash more easily.
During a session with the Federation of Disability Organisations, BoG’s Currency Management Department head, Dominic Owusu, explained that the new features reflect a broader push to modernise the cedi while ensuring it meets the needs of all users.
Owusu noted that people may face varied challenges when identifying currencies, handling banknotes and coins, and conducting cash transactions independently. He said inclusivity is an ongoing commitment and that the Bank will continue to engage with disability groups to assess the series’ performance in everyday use.
The central bank also urged banks, businesses, transport operators and other cash handlers to adopt more inclusive practices, providing assistance where necessary while safeguarding individuals’ independence, privacy and dignity.
BoG remains open to further dialogue with disability organisations as it works to strengthen public confidence in the Ghana cedi and ensure every Ghanaian can use and handle the currency with confidence, convenience and dignity.
