On Monday, October 12, 2026, Bekwai Member of Parliament Ralph Poku‑Adusei paid a working visit to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital to engage with management and staff on the facility’s achievements, ongoing projects and operational challenges.
The MP’s tour included familiarisation and inspection activities that underscored his commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery as a foundation for development, alongside education and agriculture.
A key highlight was an inspection of progress on the KNUST Medical School project, located on the hospital premises. Management briefed the MP that the project has received support from VALCO and is expected to transform the hospital into a teaching and training hub for future doctors while bringing specialist consultants closer to residents of Bekwai.
Addressing staff, Poku‑Adusei commended the dedication and sacrifices of health professionals, particularly their efforts in steering the facility’s transition from a primary healthcare facility to a secondary‑level hospital accredited by the Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA). He said, “Life is precious and good health is fundamental to everything we do. My commitment to supporting the welfare of my constituents transcends political differences.”
Medical Superintendent Dr Serebour outlined key challenges confronting the hospital following its elevation to secondary‑level status, including limited capacity at the emergency unit, the absence of a dedicated isolation unit, inadequate accommodation for critical health personnel, the lack of a CT scan facility and delays associated with laboratory equipment.
The hospital also disclosed that it has available land for expansion but requires support for infrastructure development. Management expressed interest in exploring public‑private partnerships (PPPs) to establish a CT scan and advanced diagnostic centre.
During the visit, Poku‑Adusei was briefed on plans to introduce a queue management system to improve patient flow, reduce congestion and minimise misunderstandings between patients and staff. Beyond financial support, he committed to providing free airtime on his FM platform to educate the public on hospital procedures, patient rights and health protocols, an initiative aimed at improving public awareness and cooperation.
The visit ended with both the MP and hospital management agreeing to maintain continuous engagement to help transform the Bekwai Municipal Hospital into a centre of excellence in the Ashanti Region.
