Bayern Munich’s 59‑match run of goals in competitive fixtures ended when Schalke 04 held the champions to a 0‑0 draw in Gelsenkirchen. The match, played on a Sunday, saw the German side fail to find the back of the net for the first time since the 2019‑20 season.
Luis Díaz came closest to breaking the drought, missing a one‑on‑one chance with a wide shot and a chipped ball that was cleared before reaching the line. Bayern’s manager, Vincent Kompany, had rotated the squad after opening the season with a 5‑1 victory over VfB Stuttgart and a 4‑1 win in the DFB Pokal against third‑tier Osnabruck.
Harry Kane and Michael Olise were on the bench as Bayern dominated possession but struggled to convert chances. Kane entered at halftime, but it was not until Olise and Jamal Musiala were introduced that Bayern’s pressure increased. Musiala, making his first appearance of the season after pre‑season seizures, was involved in a close‑range effort that was cleared by the Schalke defence.
Konrad Laimer sliced into the side netting from close range, and Kane forced a fingertip save from goalkeeper Loris Karius with a late drive aimed at the top corner. Despite the effort, Bayern could not penetrate Schalke’s compact defence, securing the first point of the season for the hosts.
Kane, in his 96th Bundesliga appearance, still needs two goals to reach 100 in the competition, a record for the fewest matches to reach a century. He has scored against 20 of the 21 teams he has faced in the league. This result means Bayern will not finish on top of the table for the first time in 67 Bundesliga matchdays.
Bayern will host Bodo/Glimt in their opening Champions League game on Thursday before travelling to face Bundesliga newcomers Elversberg on 13 September.
