Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s 2028 flag‑bearer, is preparing to launch a new policy package for Ghana’s cocoa sector, according to Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh‑Dompreh. The initiative seeks to tackle long‑standing challenges such as low producer prices, rising input costs, disease, ageing farms and declining yields.
Mr Annoh‑Dompreh said the proposals stem from extensive consultations between a minority parliamentary team and cocoa farmers nationwide. He revealed that the team’s findings were presented to Mr Bawumia in June, and the former Vice‑President has since referred the report to the NPP’s Policy Committee on Agriculture, Food Security and Agribusiness for technical assessment and development of costed policy options.
During a speech in Duayaw Nkwanta, Ahafo Region, on 4 September 2026, Mr Annoh‑Dompreh also highlighted the delivery of 84 motorised spraying machines to cocoa farmer groups, a move aimed at improving disease control and productivity.
The current producer price of GH¢2,587 per 64‑kilogram bag for the 2026 light crop season—equivalent to GH¢41,392 per tonne—has sparked concerns among farmers. The forthcoming policy package is positioned as a potential alternative to address these issues and strengthen the cocoa sector.
Observers will watch for the formal unveiling of the package, which is expected to outline concrete measures to support cocoa farmers and enhance sustainability across the industry.
