On Monday, October 19, Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu blasted former New Patriotic Party flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s criticism of the government’s 24‑hour economy policy as a joke, accusing him of engaging in what he described as "voodoo economics".
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said Bawumia’s arguments lacked a sound economic basis, adding that the former vice‑president had mismanaged the economy during his tenure, citing high inflation, rising public debt, currency depreciation and bondholder losses.
He argued that the economy had improved significantly under the current administration, noting that every single measure of economic performance today was better than it was when Bawumia left office. The minister also challenged Bawumia’s recent stance on economic stability, pointing out that the former vice‑president had previously declared exchange‑rate stability the most important indicator in 2014.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu further highlighted that prices of essential commodities, such as diesel, had fallen since the previous administration, with November 2022 diesel prices at about GH¢23 per litre now lower. He maintained that the economic indicators did not support Bawumia’s criticism.
While acknowledging that the economy could still improve, the minister said the government remained committed to addressing the challenges facing the country, vowing to work assiduously to make things better than they are today.
