Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga has proposed that Aayalolo buses be given dedicated lanes on selected roads during peak hours in Accra. The plan, announced during a visit to the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive, aims to cut travel time and reduce fuel consumption for commuters.
Ayariga said the proposal would involve consultations with the Ministries of Roads and Highways, Transport and the Interior to design an effective implementation strategy. Under the arrangement, buses would use lanes on opposite sides of roads depending on the direction of peak‑hour traffic.
The minister stressed that a reliable, rapid bus service could persuade commuters to abandon private cars. “If people know they can get to work in 20 minutes on an Aayalolo, they will leave their cars and join us,” he said. He added that the government would map routes and work with the Ministry of Transport and Trade to make the system efficient.
Officials will now examine the feasibility of the proposal and outline the next steps for turning Aayalolo into a rapid public transport option.
