Ben Abdallah Alhassan, the Municipal Chief Executive of Asokore Mampong, confirmed that the Assembly will review calls for a footbridge on the Aboabo‑Airport Roundabout after an accident that killed four pupils of the Institute of Islamic Studies.
During a visit to the families of the deceased and to three other children who sustained critical injuries and are now at Manhyia Government Hospital, Mr Alhassan assured the public that a technical assessment by road engineers would be undertaken to determine the feasibility, design and suitability of a bridge for the available space.
The Assembly is prepared to engage the relevant experts and to find a lasting solution to the safety concerns on the busy stretch. In the meantime, it is working with the Municipal Education Directorate to ensure that schools along the road provide adults or designated officials to help pupils cross safely before and after school.
Mr Alhassan explained that the design and dimensions of a footbridge must be carefully considered before a decision is taken, noting that “footbridges serve a variety of purposes and their expanse, the width and the nature of such footbridges must also be considered by road engineers to see how well it will be able to fit that particular space.”
He also pledged to cover the hospital bills of the injured pupils currently receiving treatment.
