In the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region, traditional authorities in Akwaboa have publicly criticised the government for its continued neglect of the community’s main road. The unpaved collector, which connects Akwaboa to the Ntensere‑Sunyani and Adankwame‑Barekese arterial highways, remains riddled with potholes, gullies and dust, forcing residents into a daily struggle for safe transport.
Sub‑chiefs, including Nana Osei Kwadwo, Akyeamehene Nana Kwame Bonsu and Benkumhene Nana Bremchamfour Boateng, have lodged several representations to the District Assembly, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council and the Ministry of Roads and Highways. They claim that all efforts have yielded no tangible results, leaving the road in a deplorable state. “Our own people are insulting us because of this road,” lamented Nana Osei Kwadwo, “but we have knocked on every door to ensure that the road is fixed.”
Chiefs argue that repairing the road would ease congestion on the Sunyani and Barekese highways, reduce transport costs, and improve health conditions by cutting down on dust‑related respiratory ailments. “The dust is killing us,” said Nana Bremchamfour Boateng, urging authorities to expedite the project.
While the road has reportedly been awarded to a contractor who has begun work from Adankwame, the chiefs insist that the project has stalled and that the community’s repeated assurances have gone unfulfilled. The road is vital for farmers, traders, schoolchildren and motorists from neighbouring communities such as Sokwai and Mpaso.
Traditional leaders warn that continued neglect could spark youth agitation and erode public confidence in leadership. They appeal to the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ashanti Regional Minister and the District Assembly to prioritise the paving and taring of the Akwaboa collector road as an urgent matter.
