Afenyo-Markin Urges Politicians to Abandon Tit-for-Tat Politics

Alexander Afenyo‑Markin, Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, urged Ghanaian political leaders to move beyond retaliatory politics and adopt a more constructive approach to addressing the concerns of Ghanaians, especially the youth.

Speaking at the St. John the Baptist Memorial Lecture organised by the Knights of St. John International and Ladies Auxiliary, the theme was “Speaking Truth to Power: Upholding Justice, Morality and National Accountability.” Afenyo‑Markin warned against an “I do you, you do me” style of politics, arguing that such conduct erodes efforts to build a responsible political environment.

He called on leaders to challenge excesses within their own parties rather than perpetuating a cycle of political retaliation, and to demonstrate greater principle and moderation in their conduct. Afenyo‑Markin reflected on his role in promoting stability during the New Patriotic Party’s time in government, noting that as a Deputy Leader and later Leader he worked “night work” to ensure stability.

He added that political leaders must be prepared to take principled positions even when it exposes their parties to criticism, and that while party directives can influence public statements, leaders still have room to exercise personal judgment and foster a more constructive political culture.

Observers say the call comes amid growing frustration over stalled reforms and a perceived lack of accountability among elected officials.
