On Thursday, September 3, Sherif Sulemana, Coordinator of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), disclosed that 14,800 candidates with aggregates ranging from 6 to 12 applied to Achimota School, which has only about 1,300 places available. The total number of applicants to the school is roughly 28,000.
Sulemana explained the selection process on the Joy FM Super Morning Show, noting that while the aggregate score is the primary ranking factor, other elements such as school and programme choices, residential preference, and the number of available places also influence placement. Candidates selecting the same school, programme, and residential option compete for the same limited spaces.
He added that raw scores break ties when candidates share the same aggregate and are vying for the same slot. The grading system can sometimes result in a candidate with a higher raw score receiving a higher aggregate than another with a lower raw score, meaning an aggregate of 15 does not guarantee admission to Achimota.
Parents and candidates are now awaiting the final placement decisions, with highly sought‑after schools expected to experience intense competition for their limited vacancies.
