Accra High Court to Hear Wontumi Bail Application on October 15

The Accra High Court is set to consider the bail application filed by former New Patriotic Party Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, today, October 15, 2026.

Wontumi’s legal team, led by counsel Samuel Atta Akyea, seeks his release pending the outcome of his appeal against a conviction and 20‑year sentence related to illegal mining at a concession in Samreboi, Western Region.

The application was originally scheduled for August 19 but was adjourned when Wontumi and his counsel were absent and the trial judge was unavailable that week.

The Attorney‑General has opposed the bail request, labeling Wontumi a flight risk, while the court clerk confirmed the judge would not sit during the week, prompting the rescheduling to today.

The hearing will allow Wontumi’s lawyers to formally move for his release while the appeal process continues.

Wontumi remains in custody, serving the 20‑year term imposed by the Accra High Court for illegal mining offences linked to the Samreboi concession.
