Aboso Fire: Inspector Hance Atubra Saves Lives, Gains Promotion

On 26 August 2026, flames erupted at the Aboso Main Lorry Station in the Western Region, threatening shops and lives. Inspector Hance Atubra of the Tarkwa Divisional Headquarters was the first officer to arrive, immediately evacuating trapped residents and rescuing victims from the inferno.

His courageous actions earned him public acclaim, with locals lifting him on their shoulders and singing praises. The incident highlighted the principle that police can protect only when the public supports them.

Within 24 hours, Inspector‑General Christian Tetteh Yohuno promoted Atubra to Chief Inspector and later decorated him at the National Police Headquarters in Accra, signalling that exemplary service is recognised and rewarded.

Yohuno stressed that police must be both rewarded for courage and disciplined for misconduct, ensuring officers understand that their uniform is not a licence to break the law. He called on citizens to cooperate with investigations, report suspicious activity, and respect lawful instructions, while also holding officers accountable through proper channels.

The Aboso incident demonstrates how public appreciation and institutional recognition can strengthen policing. It urges Ghanaians to stop attacking officers and instead support them in maintaining safety and order.
