On Thursday, October 15, 2026, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) revealed that its Aayalolo contra‑flow system can move more than 8,500 passengers a day. Each bus can carry about 85 people, and a single vehicle can make ten trips along major routes, according to Managing Director Daouda Awudu.
Awudu explained the figures on the Citi Breakfast Show, noting that 10 trips of one bus equal 850 passengers, and multiplying that by ten buses yields 8,500 daily journeys. He cited the Kasoa corridor as an example, where 11 buses run three trips each in the morning, totaling 33 trips that can carry 2,805 passengers alone.
The contra‑flow system allows Aayalolo buses to use road space against the normal traffic direction, aiming to reduce congestion and travel times for commuters heading into Accra for work and business. GAPTE began a feasibility study on September 17, 2026, with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders, initially focusing on the Kinbu‑Adenta corridor.
Awudu said the system would benefit traders and other commuters, stating, “This is mathematics and data for all of us to appreciate that it is something that would help our brothers and sisters, our mothers who are trading in Makola and other areas. It is something that I believe we must embrace to help all of us.”
GAPTE plans to expand the contra‑flow network across key Accra corridors, hoping to ease daily traffic woes and improve public transport efficiency.
