A tragic end has met the search for a two-and-a-half-year-old boy in the Central Region. The toddler, identified as Nana Yaw, was discovered lifeless in a thicket on Sunday afternoon after going missing for three days.
The heartbreaking discovery has plunged the residents of Assin Awiafitaamu, a community near Ketukrom in the Assin North District, into deep mourning and shock.
The Disappearance
The ordeal began on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, when young Nana Yaw vanished from his home. According to local sources, the toddler had been left in the care of his two siblings while their grandmother went to work on the family farm. Upon her return, the boy was nowhere to be found.
Alarmed by his sudden disappearance, family members and local residents quickly mobilized. They launched frantic search parties and broadcasted announcements through local information centers in neighboring communities, hoping for a safe return.
When initial efforts failed, the child’s grandfather, Godwin Tettey Amanor, officially reported the matter to the police on Friday, May 15.

Heartbreaking Discovery
The community’s worst fears were realized on Sunday, May 17, at approximately 4:39 p.m.
A group of hunters from nearby Assin Kushea, who were tracking game with their hunting dogs near a settlement known as Papa Magye’s cottage, stumbled upon the toddler’s body hidden beneath thick bushes.
The hunters immediately raised the alarm, alerting local residents and the family before notifying the authorities.
Police Launch Investigation
A police team led by the District Crime Officer, ASP Charles Akugre, swiftly visited the scene to initiate a rigorous investigation.

Nearly two kilometers away from the home where he was first reported missing.

Crime Scene Details: Investigators noted that the child was lying on his back, dressed in an orange shirt and violet trousers. A pair of rubber slippers, suspected to belong to the toddler, was recovered just a few feet away from the body.
Preliminary examinations revealed visible injuries, including marks on the child’s head and other parts of his body. Investigators estimate that the child likely died late Saturday, May 16, as signs of decomposition had already begun to set in.
Next Steps
Following a thorough documentation and photographic session at the scene, the toddler’s remains were transported to the Assin Foso St. Francis Xavier Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead.
The body is currently being preserved at the hospital morgue pending an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
